A bite from a vampire does not turn a human into one. The only way a human can become a vampire is if they are completely drained of blood, then vampiric blood replaced in their veins. This is a risky process, and often goes awry.
As in common literature, vampires cannot go out in sunlight: it will burn them and, if out long enough, will set them alight. Before reaching immortality, solar damage can and has killed a fledgling vampire.
"Tracing" is a form of teleportation, and the vampires’ preferred means of travel. A vampire can only trace to destinations s/he has previously been or to those s/he can see.
Each of the Vampiric breeds are split into clans, or 'Courts'. There are three of these.
Red Court.
Vampires capable of wearing a 'skin suit' and appearing human, whilst actually resembling large bats are of the Red Court. They drink blood to survive, dislike the High Council and the immortal races allied with it, and detest humans.
They are very strong, can fly (since they have wings, and all...), but are not very fast. Strength over speed.
Ruled by Vladimir von Drakul, depicted in human lore as 'Count Dracula'.
Black Court.
Hideous vampires that look very much like Nosferatu, an unsurprising fact given that he is their ruler. Also warring with the High Council and it's allies, holding a (rather tenuous) alliance with the Red Court. Hate humans even more than the Red Court. They need blood to survive, but also enjoy human flesh.
They prefer a subtle conflict over a full-blown war, though they are as strong as a Red Court vampire.
White Court.
Elegant and attractive, White Court vampires embody the human myth of the sexual vampire. They feed on sexual energy, and most hate the sight of blood. They are not supernaturally strong, but they are unnaturally fast, which can put them at an advantage in battle. Can't fall in love with anything other than one of their own race, or their skin will blister and burn when touched by their beloved.
White Court vampires have an alliance with the High Council, and are ruled by Kharon.
