"… and those sentient creatures that are not human shall be united in one stratum, coexisting with, yet secret from, man’s. Two factions, good and evil, in constant battle. And mankind just happens to be in the way..."
Immortals, or "Lorekind", have existed alongside mankind for millennia, they just don't like to advertise that fact (something to do with Witch-burning).
Lorekind keeps itself to itself, except in the case of the Iniruia, who want to wipe humans (and the Veritatis) from the face of the planet. It was during one of these battles that the Chosen Ones were formed.
A group of Kalieæ betrayed their race and allied with the Iniuria, and began joining in the human massacre. In a bid to prevent this from going any further than it had, the High Council chose members of the Kalieæ still allied with the Veritatis, who held both an extraordinary gift, and an extraordinary spirit. These Kalieæ were instrumental in preventing any further mortal deaths, and condemning the traitors to an endless life-without-living as non-corporeal spirits in the Rift.
The Chosen were lauded heroes of mortal and immortal alike, and the High Council decreed that they should remain protectors to both. To ensure this, their immortality was revoked, and their souls bound to the Earth. Every 60 years, the Chosen were doomed to die and be reborn, and Woken should they need to go to war once more. The only one whose immortality was locked was the Prophet. "For who else will be there to Wake the warriors of the Veritatis to their destiny?"
Life was not to remain peaceful for the Chosen; a mere year after the conclusion of the battle with the traitors, another war broke out within the Kalieæn ranks. Again, the Chosen went to battle, and again they won, but not without loss to their ranks. Dissidents were banished to the Rift, and life went on for those Chosen remaining. Until the Rebirth Cycle began...
