The Time Master
Name: Kali Anne McKinnon
Meaning: Kali: Time, era. McKinnon: Fair born
Nickname(s): None
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Preference: Straight
Studying / profession: AS-level Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and History
Physical Appearances:
Kali stands at 5’5, and is possessed of a gently curvy figure, without being overweight. Her wavy brown hair just brushes her shoulders with a short fringe straight covering her forehead. Her eyes are hazel in colour with long dark lashes, and helped out by round glasses, often to be found perched halfway down her nose to make reading easier.
Piercings: Single piercing in each ear
Tattoos: None
Other distinguishing features: Small scar on the back of her left hand from an ill-advised attempt at roller-blading when she was 12.
Clothing Style:
Kali mostly sticks to skirts and blouses, the slightly twee dress sense having been forced upon her during her mother’s occasional bouts of interest in her at a young age. She rarely wears trousers or jeans, and never trainers, instead preferring low-heeled court shoes or sandals. People say she'd be quite pretty, if she only paid more attention to her clothes and took better care of her appearance. She wears little jewellery, usually a pair of small crystal studs in her ears and a silver bangle that belonged to her mother.
Likes:
- Milky tea
- Birds
- Drawing/painting
- Reading
- Piano music
Dislikes:
- Dogs
- Rain
- Being interrupted while she’s working
- Finding herself the centre of attention
Strengths:
- Intelligent and focussed – Kali’s studies are her main priority in life, and she once spent an entire summer holiday working her way through the Classics
- Powers of observation – while she wouldn’t consider herself nosy, Kali spots anything unusual or out of the ordinary, and very little gets past her
- Good memory – very handy for all the complex scientific terminology she’s attempting to learn
Weaknesses:
- Social situations: Kali struggles in social situations, hating to be the centre of attention and struggling to fit in with people
- Inability to shut down and relax – being so driven and constantly focused on her excessively large workload, Kali has learned to deal with a lack of ‘personal time’, preferring to throw everything she is into her work.
- Inability to let people get close to her
- Easily frustrated and angered when she struggles to pick up new concepts and ideas
Fears:
- Becoming like her mother
- Losing anyone close to her
- Failure, at anything
Personality:
Kali is fiercely independent – having never really known life as part of a family unit she grew up very fast and has always taken care of herself. As a result, she has never felt the need to bring people close to her, and with the exception of one or two close friends, she is usually very reserved and uncommunicative around other people. In a way this is a defence mechanism – she is scared of becoming too dependent on someone who may then abandon her. She has watched people get hurt, heard people talking about family break ups, and feels no need to be involved in this.
Kali is focused and driven, giving 110% to any task she takes on, and this is especially true where her school work is concerned. Most people would look at her subject list and go pale, but she thrives on the challenge of having so much to do and is yet to miss a deadline. Having been at boarding school from a very young age she is used to being constantly in an academic environment and plans her time well to fit all her studies in. Social interaction often suffers as a result, but that’s never worried Kali too much. She can come across as quite cold, and doesn’t cry easily, but those rare few who are lucky enough to get close to her find a gentle and caring soul behind the many defences she puts up against the world.
There is a side of her that she keeps hidden though – she loves nature, and will regularly wake early to sketch the scene outside her window and watch the birds. She also sketches scenes from her dreams. She dreams vividly and regularly remembers detail, but never talks about what she's seen, some of what she sees is pleasant, while some is terrifying. She has a very scientific, linear mind and finds it difficult to open herself up to possibilities other than her known and accepted truths. She doesn’t believe in the supernatural, or in anything ‘odd’, preferring proven scientific fact to what she sees as flights of fancy.
Family:
Robert McKinnon, father, 46
Annie McKinnon, mother, deceased (aged 34)
Background:
Kali is the daughter of a wealthy businessman who travels frequently and rarely spends more than a few days at home at a time. Her mother is weak and sickly; she desperately wanted a child, but was never particularly well-equipped to take care of her daughter. As a result, Kali was looked after by a nanny from a young age, spending small periods of time with her mother on her ‘better days,’ and then packed off to boarding school at the age of 7. Her mother died of a heart attack when Kali was 13. She occasionally feels sad when hearing other people talk about their relationship with their parents, but rarely dwells on the issue, not feeling the loss of something she's never really know.
Having been sent to boarding school at the age of 7, Kali is used to spending time away from home and only returns there in the holidays. She started at Haversham Manor as early as they would take her, and is now as much of a fixture there as the building itself.
